Green Mountain Children’s Museum has found a potential home!
October, 12, 2007 –Green Mountain Children’s Museum (GMCM) is pleased to announce its inclusion in Mayor Bob Kiss’ working proposal to redevelop the waterfront’s Moran Plant. GMCM is one of four organizations included in a CEDO-organized open house Saturday, October 13 from noon – 4PM at the historic and long-vacant building it hopes to make its home.
Open house visitors will get a taste of the types of activities offered at a children’s museum. GMCM will provide oversized blocks and boxes for building. Children and their caregivers can also try their hand at a tops table. Schematics of the proposed renovations including the Children’s Museum space will be available for viewing as well.
“The waterfront really is Burlington’s playground. What better place than the waterfront for a Children’s Museum?” states GMCM founder, Mia Graham Beer. “The Moran Plant project is in keeping with one of our core philosophies of ensuring the Children’s Museum is accessible to all Vermonters, year round.”
Children’s museums are the fastest growing cultural institutions in America, yet Vermont is one of just five states in the country without one. Over three years ago, a group of eight people set out to change that. “We want children of all ages, means, and backgrounds to have a place where they can gather to do what they do best – play,” continued Mia Graham Beer. “In our community there are currently 22 different languages spoken. The language of play is universally understood.”
The Green Mountain Children’s Museum invites the young and young at heart to experience the wonder of hands-on exploration. Its mission is to spark imaginations and create an environment where playing and learning go hand in hand. Individuals interested in volunteering their time and talents to this effort can contact the Green Mountain Museum at www.gmcm.org.
